Gearbox and starter engine |
The cylinderhead is still stuck, a friend of ours is coming over in a few weeks to have a look at the options. He probably has a couple of good ideas, and tools as well. Till then, we won't be putting a lot of effort in trying, since a proper tool probably does the same job, better, faster. The required power is above our expectations, so we better not rush on this one. So, we've been enjoying ourselves with the rest of the engine. As you can see in the picture on the right, we've removed the gearbox. We continued by removing the clutch and flywheel came off fairly easy as well. Also, a friend of ours dismantled the starting engine, cleaned it up, and thoroughly tested it. Now it works great again, it's sandblasted and ready for paint. The picture on the left shows the flywheel and the cluch, partly disambled. The fywheel ring gear looks to be undamaged. This was a concern of ours, since the engine is stalled, and a previous owner could have tried starting is anyway. The depth of the clutch plate is about 4 mm, we were wondering whether or not we can still use it. Any ideas about this? On the right we can see the valve cover. The alloy is slightly corroded, I've removed most of it, but it will be a nice job for the coming christmas days to really clean it up. We like the casted alloy's roughness, so we won't really polish it. Thanks Sander and Ilja, do come again! | | | | |

Air Intake and the Generator |
| We need special tools to continue with the engine and cylinderhead, so for now, we conitnue with some other parts, the braking oil reservoir, the air intake and the generator. The barking oil reservoit has been sanded and painted, the air intake is a much bigger job, because we can’t sand it all the way, due the dimension of our sand blaster. Sanding paper is doing a great job, but it takes a while. The Generator already was in a good condition, and because the housing is made of aluminium, it won’t be painted, so it is not sanded, just cleaned up. The mechanism is a bit more difficult. The bearing are mounted on with a bearing press. Since we don’t have one (yet?), we can’t remove the bearings. We’ll find a way to clean it up. And I’ll keep you posted. Cheers! |

Car off to the paint-stripper |
| We sent the car off to Mitraco - a company that specializes in stripping the paint off a car body. The car will be "bathed" in Kalium Hydroxide, which does not affect the metal. It will remove probably all of the paint, and hopefully most of the sticky black stuff. In two to three weeks we´ll have it back from the guys in Belgium, and we´re very curious about the result. We´re waiting for a delivery from Häckner, that should contain all engine parts we need at this moment. |

Today, we went to Mitraco to check on the car. Most of the paint is already gone - and luckily - that goes for the black sticky stuff as well ! They winched the car out of it's bath ( KOH bath at 80 degrees Celcius ) and sprayed it off a little, so we could have a look at the bare metal. It's really cool to see how this works. The car didn't look too bad, but I couldn't get a really good view at it : you don't want to get too close to the car because of the toxic stuff. The doors, hood and bootlid are already done - and they looked pretty allright ! Some tiny holes, but nothing to be worried about. The car will be done next thursday probably, we can't wait ! | .jpg)

Last thursday, we got the car back from the paintstripper. Although we're very happy with the paint-stripping results, we weren't so happy to see that the car has suffered some damage in the past. .JPG)

| The day after picking the car up from the paintstripper, we took it to the sandblaster. We rented the blasting cabin, so we could do the blasting ourselves ! It was really cool. We blasted about 600 kg of sand onto the car, that got rid of whatever was left on the car : some rust, a bit of paint and some bitumen. | .JPG)

| With renewed energy, and with the help of a friend, we've started on the bodywork. We've closed a couple of holes in the wheel arch on the left side on the car, and closed the hole in the spare wheel thing as well. | | | |
